Odlums has a new TV campaign that was created by Dublin agency Atomic.

The soundtracks were created and mixed in Slate with some great music for both commercials written by Steve Lynch of Stellarsound.

When advertising agency Y & R came to Slate to give us the brief for a big commercial they had in the pipeline, little did we know just what a huge campaign this would become.

Composer John Walsh delivered various music versions as things evolved, multiple ISDN recordings from all over the world and a ton of sound design were all completed at Slate. The production process went on for weeks as the commercial progressed and the end result was getting closer.
The commercial is currently airing in numerous markets around the world.

It's been a busy time in Slate recently....

From numerous TV and Radio advertising campaigns to TV series' and corporate work, it's all been happening. Currently a large number of high-end projects are underway including ADR recordings for a US feature, music based projects and more commercials. Then there's been a series of long form documentaries and a number of casting sessions for large radio and TV projects. We've also been busy looking after our overseas friends who call on us on a regular basis.

Glen Dimplex Group Corporate Video

Slate Records Tales For The iPad

Slate is delighted to have provided recording facilities for a Canadian based company that specialises in producing stories for the iPad.

It originally involved the director being in Dublin for the first recording and from then on it has been done remotely. The voice-over artists now take direction from the director who sits in the comfort of his own home in Canada, even though the time differences don't always see him get a good nights sleep!

Hector Gets Stuck Into Canada on TG4

Slate has just completed work on a new four part series 'Gualainn le Gualainn' (Shoulder to Shoulder) which looks at the history of Irish rugby. The production has been ongoing for some time and was directed by Andrew Gallimore.

All the heavy hitters of Irish rugby appear including WIllie John McBride, Ray McLoughlin, Tony Ward, Ollie Campbell, Brian O'Driscoll, Jack Kyle and many many more.

The series consists of four one hour shows and will air on TG4 in November.

Kinsale Shark Awards 2010

Programme One: Pamela Hackett

The first of a new series of 'This is Me' tells the personal story of 60-year-old Pamela Hackett; a petite, articulate and good looking woman. For 50 years Pamela knew she had 'something' but didn't know what. Pamela now knows that she has been living with Tourette Syndrome (TS) all her life.

Until May 2000 Pamela had no idea what she was suffering from. She happened to be listening to Health Report on RTÉ Radio One and subsequently contacted the Mater Hospital. Within five minutes of her appointment she was diagnosed with Tourettes.

All audio post-production on the new series was once again completed in Slate. The new series starts on RTE One Television on Friday August 27th.

It's been a busy time in Slate finishing all audio post-production on the new summer advertising campaign for mobile phone operator O2. The campaign features various radio and tv commercials.

Gabriel Byrne was back in Dublin for a few days and dropped in to Slate to lend his voice talents to the TV campaign while Irish actor Aidan Kelly voiced all the radio commercials.

The campaign is also running outdoors on billboards and buses.

The Limits of Liberty is the story of Irish Independence. How governments of the early decades of independence were preoccupied with one overriding issue, power. Ireland Expo 2010 Shanghai

Slate has completed all sound-design and audio post-production on the 30 minute soundtrack to accompany the spectacular visuals on the 'Wall Of Creativity' currently being shown until October 31st at the Ireland Expo 2010 in Shanghai. 70 million visitors are expected to visit the expo.

The soundtrack features the best of Irish musical talent including rock, traditional, pop and more and is interweaved with a full and comprehensive sound bed.

Among the 195 national contributions, the Ireland pavilion enjoyed a tremendously successful first day when it opened on May 1st, receiving almost 15,000 visitors. Ireland's contribution to Expo is rated among the top 10 pavilions.

Stockard Channing visits Slate

A recent visitor to Slate was Stockard Channing who played 'Rizzo' in Grease and more recently for portraying the First Lady, Abbey Bartlet in the NBC television series The West Wing. She also starred in the stage and screen versions of Six Degrees Of Seperation.

Stockard was in Slate to narrate a PBS television documentary via ISDN where she took guidance and cues from the documentary's director who was located in New York.

Slate Mixing Other Voices In 5.1 Surround

Slate has been busy remixing series 7 and 8 of Other Voices into 5.1 surround sound for overseas broadcast. Series 7 from 2009 features James Morrison, Jape, Duke Special, Elbow and Richard Hawley amongst many others.

Series 8 which recently aired in Ireland features great performances from a host of artists including Florence & The Machine, The Chakras, Snow Patrol, Brett Anderson, The XX, Temper Trap and Imelda May.

Eight years on and Other Voices has grown in popularity and is well respected within all musical circles. The 'Dingle Concerts' as they have become known in the musical world are now sought after gigs with worldwide recognition. It's great to see the series gathering momentum from around the globe.

BMW and Mini have launched stylish new advertising campaigns.

Mini features the voice of well know Irish actor Pat Kinevane who gives a great performance. David Suchet lends his now familiar warm and rich tones to the BMW campaign. As always, both campaigns are highly styled and attention grabbing.

BMW creative work was by Sinead Kennedy and Mini by Jody Ronaldson, both of McConnells Integrated. Paul Ellis was agency producer for both campaigns.

Teens In The Wild - Series 2

In the 2nd Series of the acclaimed 'Teens in the Wild', Clinical psychologist, David Coleman once again takes a group of six troubled teenagers, on a three week activities and therapy course. This series sees David bringing the girls to a remote location in Donegal where mobile phones, television and alcohol are nowhere to be found. It doesn't get more isolated than this. He works with girls, aged 14-17, who are struggling to deal with issues including anger management, bereavement, separation and problems at school - all of which have resulted in strained relations with their parents who are at breaking point.

The series is currently airing on RTE 1 Television on Monday nights at 9.35pm. All audio post-production was completed at Slate.

'Into The Light' The Making Of An Opera

Into the Light: The making of an Opera is a ‘behind the scenes’ documentary about the staging in DIT of the opera The Magic Flute. The film, which has been acquired by RTE for broadcast, charts the trials, tribulations and hopes of the cast and crew as they attempt to stage this lavish opera.

Directed by Frank Berry, and produced by Gráinne O’Rourke with Bríd Grant as Executive Producer, the production team filmed the primary characters involved in the opera production on a frequent basis in the run-up to the opening night. With a running-time of 25 minutes, the documentary is a lively and enthralling piece, peppered throughout with the enchanting music of W A Mozart.

Eight years on and Other Voices makes a welcome return to our screens on Wednesday February 3rd at 11.20pm. The series will run over a six week period on RTE 2 and programme 1 gets off to flying start with Snow Patrol, Adrian Crowley, Speech Debelle and Low Mountain.

Safefood has launched a new advertising campaign for weigh2live.eu, the free weight-loss website. Weigh2live.eu provides independent advice on how to loose weight in a healthy way and the programme has been developed by nutritionists at Safefood with support from dietitians from the INDI.

VHI Sponsors Grey's Anatomy

The School - New Series on RTE 1 Television

The School, is a new land mark documentary series for RTE Television, following the students and teachers of St Peters College Dunboyne over one academic year. Filming began in September 2008 after months of careful negotiations with County Meath VEC. Never before has an Irish school given such unlimited access to film makers, allowing camera crews to document every aspect of school life.

This is a first for Irish television and has been very well received. Part one aired on RTE 1 Television on January 4th and runs for three weeks every Monday at 9.30pm.

PJ Gallagher - 'Back In The Saddle'

PJ Gallagher was back on our screens once again over Christmas! This time though we saw a whole different side to him as we followed PJ in his quest to become a fully fledged motorcycle racer and finish in the top 10 at the 2009 Irish Clubman track race in Mondello Park.

The one hour documentary was a mixture of highs and lows and saw PJ going through the motions in trying to race at such a competitive level. Broken bones, crashed bikes, blown engines, the drama was non-stop. A great programme that was shown on RTE 1 Television that was well worth viewing.

Tommy & Hector's 'Craic House'

It was a busy run up to Christmas for Slate. Broadcast work was keeping the candles burning late into the evenings in order to try and complete audio post work before the Christmas holidays.

Tommy & Hector presented their one hour TV special - 'Craic House' which featured a range of guests, music and games. The programme was shot as a live show in the Radisson Hotel in Galway and was as mad and wild as you'd expect when these two get together!

Room To Improve - Christmas Special

Architect Dermot Bannon from the series 'Room To Improve' returns for a one off Christmas Special where he is given a € 70,000 budget to transform a dull bungalow into a haven for a mother and daughter in Ratoath, Co. Dublin.

The usual differences of opinion between architect and client feature on camera however all ends well with everybody eventually happy! The new series is due back on our screens in 2010.

'The Sheriff and Me' Documentary

Slate recorded and mixed the recent documentary 'The Sheriff And Me' which was screened on RTE Television on Sunday December 6th. The documentary followed a number of people who were being pursued by the County Sheriff for debts that were owed.

The 52 minute programme gave an insight into the workings of the Sheriffs office and the consequences of ignoring letters from his office.

Bulmers new Christmas TV campaign has gone to air. The commercials feature the now familiar characters from the orchard who are up to their usual tricks! There's fierce competition among them to be selected as the staff member who gets to switch on the Christmas lights however not all goes to plan......

The commercials were directed by Damien O'Donnell of Russell Curran Films in Dublin and creative work was by Stephen Pullen of Young Euro RSCG in Dublin.

VHI Campaign

Slate has completed audio post-production on VHI's new TV campaign which features real stories of how people needed to avail of Ireland's leading health insurer.

Each of the commercials are mostly animation based which eventually reveals the featured person on camera. Animation was done at Piranha Bar in Dublin.

A number of commercials make up the campaign which is currently airing. Creative work was by Mark Tuthill and Carol Lambert of Publicis QMP in Dublin.

Horslips In Concert

Legendary Irish band Horslips are back on tour but for two nights only. They are playing their first full concerts in more than three decades at The Odyssey Arena, Belfast and The O2, Dublin on December 3rd and 5th.

Slate were commissioned to sound design and mix the 3 minute soundtrack which will open the show before the band take to the stage. The concerts promise to great shows which will see the band perform songs from their back catalogue.

All Ireland Talent Show Stings

Xccelerate is the latest motoring programme on Irish TV. Produced entirely in Ireland, the show features Irish cars, Irish locations and Irish presenters. Xccelerate looks at the latest cars arriving into the Irish market as well as some of the fanciest cars in the world.

Cervical Check TV & Global Awards For Healthcare Communications

The Cervical Check TV commercial created by McCann Erickson in Dublin has picked up a finalist certificate at the global awards for healthcare communications in New York last week.

The Cervical Check 'Changes' campaign had already won a Gold and Silver Shark at the International Shark Awards in Kinsale in September.

The audio post-production was a tricky and comprehensive job as it required the voice seamlessly morphing from a young girl to a middle aged woman to an elderly lady but all staying in sync and as a gradual effect.

Blacrock College Calls On Slate Corporate....

Blackrock College recently called on Slate to produce and manage a full evenings entertainment in the Fitzpatrick Castle Hotel, Killiney. The event was to honour all past S.C.T. players and join in an evening of nostalgia and fond memories as the college celebrates its 150th anniversary.

Slate produced, edited and mixed a full 10 minute DVD presentation which was the highlight of the evening following speeches and dinner for nearly 600 guests. The two ballrooms in Fitzpatricks were packed to capacity and some of the great rugby heroes past and present were all there.

Past Rock men - Hugo McNeil, Brendan Mullen, Fergus Slattery, Don Kissane, Noel Turley, Leo Cullen, Noel Turley, Neil Frances, Allain Rolland, Niall Woods and Niall Brophy to name just a few made it a memorable evening.

All lighting and PA equipment were provided and operated by the Slate crew.

National Dairy Council Campaign

The National Dairy Council has chosen a Munster and Ireland rugby legend to front its new national advertising campaign. Paul O'Connell appears in a new TV commercial to ask Irish consumers to choose milk and cream with the NDC mark and help support local dairy farmers.

The three commercials, a 30, 20 and 10 second, were directed by Brian Durnin and produced by Paul Holmes of Red Rage Films in Dublin. All audio post was completed in Slate.

Featuring some of Irelands top athletes and coaches, the commercials feature sports footage and pieces to camera coupled with high-impact sound design. The Halifax Bank TV campaign has been received well and recently a 30 second version of the 'Faces & Places' commercial has been edited and mixed at Slate. The campaign features legendary Irish actor Colm Meaney.

A local radio campaign for Calor Gas has recently been recorded and mixed at Slate. The 20 second radio commercials were produced by Y & R in Dublin. Morgan Jones is the featured VO artist.

With the recently successful TV campaign for Cadbury's Snack Bars, new versions of the commercials have been recorded and mixed at Slate. This time round its for the new range of Cadbury's Snack 'Orange'.

It's Been Busy....

It has been a busy last few weeks at Slate with more great work being produced. There have been radio spots for TG4 promoting their Friday night 'Cowboys & Classic Westerns' season. All casting, recording and mixing was handled by Slate.

'The House' Nominated For Best TV Doc

Slate are delighted that first time director, Tanya Doyle's documentary 'The House' has been chosen from 465 entries from over 40 countries to compete for 'Best TV Documentary' at the Prix Europa Festival in Berlin which will take place from 17th - 24th October.

Tanya lived at 20 Harelawn Grove, Clondalkin, West Dublin. It was her family home for all her life. In 2007, eight years after her mother died and her father had left, the decision was made to sell the house. In the days before the house was sold, Tanya brought each member of her family, her dad Ollie, her sisters Sarah, Tracey and Patrice and her brother Peter, back to the house to share their stories of their experiences, their thoughts about each other and the different views each of them had while living in the house.

The documentary was narrated by Tanya herself with editing by Stephen O'Connell and sound editing by John Griffin. The soundmix was by Locky Butler.

Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Mary Coughlan TD, recently launched a major new marketing campaign promoting Ireland as a destination for foreign direct investment. The campaign, which has been developed by IDA Ireland, is designed to position Ireland as the pre-eminent location for companies who are seeking to invest in future innovation.

Over the next 6 months, the campaign will be initially targeted at the US market and includes a series of TV commercials on CNBC and Bloomberg.

Maeve's New TV series!

Slate are delighted to be doing all audio post-production on Maeve Higgins' new series 'Fancy Vittles'.

The series, which is set in a country kitchen, sees Maeve helping her sister Lilly - a great cook - to prepare minor feasts for various people. In reality Maeve doesn't actually get to do a whole lot of cooking.....the whole time Maeve talks through her ideas and feelings about the guests, food and lots more while Lilly stays relatively quiet!

The series is currently airing on RTE 2 Television and has received great reviews.

Director Gary Shore has created a stunning trailer for his forthcoming feature; The Cup of Tears.

Produced by One Punch Films and shot in Slovenia on Red Cam all picture-post was on Flame and 3D at Windmill Lane Pictures in Dublin.

The project was completed over a six month period. All sound-design, audio editing and mixing was done in Slate. The feature is due for release in 2010.

"ME MA DRANK, me Da drank, me Da left, she drank, she died. That’s it.” Genetic inheritance, and the inheritance of loss, was central to an arresting and highly unusual autobiographical documentary by Dublin film-maker Tanya Doyle, which was screened on RTÉ this week. The House told the story of five siblings growing up in a council house in Clondalkin, west Dublin, in the 1980s and 1990s, and of how that house became a repository for the family’s memories, both good and painful, right up until 2007, eight years after their alcoholic mother’s death, when the siblings made the decision to sell the family home and move on with their individual lives.

In the days prior to boarding up the house and selling it back to the council, Doyle interviewed her father (who had long left the family and their home) and each of her siblings, three sisters and her brother, in candid conversations exploring the legacy of their family tribulations, their parents’ separation, their mother’s depression and their own struggle to live together after her death. The outcome of these encounters was not a gruesome misery memoir or a sentimental portrait of a family’s struggle to come to terms with alcoholism; rather, it was an urban poem, a pastiche of broken and disquieting images and memories, startlingly shot, a story straightforwardly told.

Although the central theme was the despair felt by Doyle’s mother, who, without resources or education, eventually succumbed to the anaesthetising power of alcohol, this fresh, honest and moving film illuminated a much larger tale than that of one family eroded by drink and frustration. Their house, and this film, looked out on to a much bigger landscape and experience: the vast expanse of west Dublin and the fate of thousands of people uprooted from city-centre communities to fester in featureless estates, abandoned without schools, churches, bus stops or a local shop – Ireland’s own apartheid.

This was an interesting and rewarding choice for RTÉ Factual to put its weight behind, and whoever made the decision to support the project should be applauded.

Meet The Neighbours

A new four part series, 'Meet The Neighbours' tells the stories of some of the residents in the radically changed town of Balbriggan in North County Dublin.

In less than five years, its population increased by over 50% and many of newly arrived residents have come from overseas. No other town in Ireland has seen a greater percentage population increase between the last two censuses than the ethnically diverse town of Balbriggan in North County Dublin.

'Meet The Neighbours' gets to know the foreigners who have settled in Balbriggan and hears their stories as well as those of the native Irish that they have decided to live amongst. 'Meet the Neighbours' begins transmission on RTÉ ONE on Friday the 15th May at 7.30pm. All audio post-production is currently underway in Slate. The series is narrated by Tom Dunne.

What a big news day it was today. George Lee announcing his intention to 'get off the fence' and see if he 'could make a difference' by entering politics. Just what all radio satire writers will be delighted with, plenty of fodder to feed off for the next few weeks and months.

But aside from all of that, what if........George became a politician.....what if Fine Gael got elected into Government....and what if George became a cabinet minister.....and what if George became Taoiseach.......maybe we won't ponder on the what if questions any longer.

Franc Is Back....and this time he's brought the camels!!

This Sunday, Peter Kelly (aka Franc) heads to London to prepare a special meal for Sky News' Lisa Burke and husband Adrian Wells.

Lisa, originally from Laois, has been the main weathergirl at Sky News for the past number of years. Her husband Adrian, is head of foreign news at the station.

Lisa and Adrian married in 2004 at a ceremony in Holy Cross Abbey, Co. Tipperary followed by a reception at Kilshane House.

This four-part series drops in on couples who were married a couple of years ago and enjoyed lavish weddings organised by Franc.

The show broadcasts on RTE One Television on Sunday nights at 8.30.

Stumbled across a few pics from the building phase of Slate in 2005. Did we ever think it would be finished......

From sparks who turned up @ 8am (on a good day) to the chippies who just never showed up...or did they one day.......eh, can't remember.

Here's the typical day in the sparks life as I recall!

8am - turn up on site, read the paper, make the tea, head to the shops to get the breakfast roll, re-read the paper, take a break @ 11am to do some work (after a row amongst themselves over who was going to do some work), take another break @ 1pm for lunch, to re-read the read of the paper, have another cup of tea, do another bit of work between 2.30 and 3pm before getting ready to go home @ 4pm.......

Wonder in current times if they're still so eager to do some work. :)

Tommy Tiernan Sets New World Record

Comedian Tommy Tiernan has set a new world record after completing over 36 hours of a continuous comedy marathon at a Galway venue.

The comic went on stage on Good Friday afternoon to begin his gruelling schedule of non-stop solo stand-up comedy.

Tommy stood for almost the entire event and got through on a diet of pasta, fruit, water and high-energy drinks. The marathon ended at 3am this morning when the world record was broken.

Tiernan plans to donate profits from the event to charity.
